01. You have something to hold.
You may never think about this, but most of the time you are in a photograph, you are usually in it with someone else or a group of people. It’s natural to throw you arm around your friends in a group or lean in close to your mom for a photograph because they’re right there. It’s natural! And we rarely think about it.
Senior portraits are different.
Having something to hold (in this case, a floral bouquet) gives more options and creativity to posing options during your session because it gives your hands something to hold on to. And, it helps alleviate the hilarious (and frequently asked) question, “What should I do with my hands?!”
02. Florals add color + dimension
Photographing sessions in the desert is beautiful: the glow, the mountains, the cacti! But at times, it can also feel plain, dry, and focused on one color (brown). Adding florals not only gives you something to hold, but adds color, texture, and interest to your photographs.
Adding florals and greenery in a simple bouquet can incorporate shades of green and endless color options, boosting the color in your photograph and really making it POP, for instance.
Endless texture options are available at your fingertips! Think about the softness baby’s breath adds; the interesting round, bright leaves of eucalyptus, or the tiny, delicate, muted color that wax flower can add! Just like texture from clothing adds interest (denim, linen, cotton), adding florals in the form of a loose bouquet can boost the dimension in your photographs.
Though it’s not needed to use your florals in every photograph, having them adds variety to your outfit choices and your gallery overall.
Consider ways to keep the bouquet natural and carefree. Going in a direction that is overly formal can lean toward a bouquet that looks bridal in form. While that can be beautiful, it’s not what we’re going for here. Ways to keep the bouquet casual include choosing greens and flowers that can be found easily at a store, bunched easily, and coordinate simply without adding in lots of variation. Secure the stems with floral wire and a casual ribbon or piece of cut fabric to tie together, for instance.
When choosing flowers and greens, make choices that will compliment (and not compete with) your session outfits. Once you’ve decided on your outfits, THEN choose the floral option to use as an addition. Here are dreamy options for senior bouquets:
Neutral Options
eucalyptus + baby’s breath
baby’s breath + olive branches
wax flowers in lavender + pink
chamomile + baby eucalyptus
Have favorite florals you love? I remember consulting with a senior and her mom mentioning she loved eucalyptus and baby’s breath. Between her classic black + denim outfits for the session and the pop of color and texture that the eucalyptus and baby’s breath senior bouquet added to the image, the result were beautiful photographs that captured her personality, style and heart well.
Maybe you’re like Meg Ryan in the movie You’ve Got Mail, when she says, “I love daisies. They’re so friendly. Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?” We all have flowers we love. If you have a favorite, consider capturing that in your photographs.
